National smoke & fire map
Not live yet — here's what it will show, and what already works today.
The map is still being built
There is no interactive map on this page yet. We'd rather show you nothing than a map that puts a plume in the wrong place, so this stays empty until the layers are wired to live data and checked against the sources below.
When it launches it will carry three layers:
- Smoke plumes — NOAA HMS smoke analysis polygons, shaded by density (light / medium / heavy).
- Active fires — NASA FIRMS VIIRS 375 m active-fire detections, clustered by density so the many pixel detections from one fire read as a single hotspot rather than a hundred separate cards. A cluster counts detections, not fires: the official incident list comes from NIFC and is shown separately.
- Station AQI — current readings from AirNow and OpenAQ monitors, on the 2024 EPA scale, each with its monitor and observation time.
Full attribution for all three feeds is on the data sources page.
